Takayama is a beautiful town located in the Japanese Alps, in Gifu prefecture. It's famous for its well-preserved old town, peaceful mountain scenery, and hiking trails. The town is home to skilled carpenters and high-quality timber, and it has cute coffee shops and plenty of space to enjoy nature. Takayama is off the beaten path for most of the year. However, it's famous for hosting two annual festivals with ancient floats that parade down the main street. The festivals also feature delicious Japanese street food and traditional music and dances. If you want to attend either the April or October festivals, be sure to book your tickets well in advance! You won't want to miss these amazing festivals!
Shirakawa-go is a unique mountainside village on the outskirts of Takayama. It is famous for its beautiful historic homes, preserved and turned into museums and shops. The villagers still live in some of the homes. Shirakawa-go is just a scenic bus ride away from Takayama, making it the perfect day trip!
